SPOTLIGHT
Dear Fundraisers - Your Career Is Not a Cinderella Story
written by: Amy Funk, Senior Vice President, Ter Molen Watkins & Brandt, LLC

As many of you know, I do a lot of mentoring in my work. One of my favorite mentoring moments is when a fundraising professional realizes that their career is not a Cinderella story. What do I mean by that? I mean that in our profession, there is sometimes an expectation that if we work hard and hit all of our goals, someone (an Executive Director, a board member, a handsome prince who is also a major donor to your organization) will notice and swoop in -- whisking you off to the ball/larger office/Director of Development role.

It's a lovely story, but it hardly reflects reality. Based on conversations with senior leaders (and in my own experience), you have to ask for the promotion. You have to advocate for that office and pay increase. No amount of virtue and hard work will replace the need to stand up and request what you need in your career. learn more
