Why did you choose a career in fundraising? For many of us, it is a career we fell into, with no concrete college courses to explain the ins and outs of the profession.

Whether officially or unofficially, you most likely have had a mentor help you navigate your career, providing you feedback that has shaped you into who you are today. We are an industry of mentors and proteges, and the human connections we create are important in navigating our careers in a world that doesn’t always understand our profession.

AFP Chicago’s Peer Mentoring Committee works behind the scenes to help make official mentor/protege connections and create an ecosystem of fundraisers that support one another.

I joined the committee in the summer of 2023 as an opportunity to give back to AFP Chicago and the welcoming community of fundraisers and support an area of professional development that means so much to me and my career. Over the last year as a committee member, I have found confidence in my own career and knowledge of the industry while also participating in the joy of watching relationships bloom between mentors and proteges.

You don’t need to have decades of experience or a leadership role to make a difference as a peer mentor. To be a part of our committee, you only need to believe in the impact of mentoring and be ready to jump in.

AFP Chicago’s Peer Mentoring Committee is looking for new committee members to join our mighty team. Together, we recruit and pair proteges and mentors for 12-month partnerships every spring and fall, guide protege/mentor relationships with a willingness to be a resource, and create a year-round suite of programming for our proteges and mentors to enhance their learning and provide opportunities for networking.
